7 haunted places that'll terrify even non-believers
Do you believe in ghosts? Whether you believe in ghosts or not, these places are sure to make you scared. There are 7 reportedly haunted locations throughout the world! Would you dare to visit them?
Some of them are very attractive, while others chill their visitors’ bones from the first sight. However, all of them are united by supernatural events that are happening there. Haunted sites are spread all over the world, and some of them can be closer to you than you think. Here are the 7 most haunted places on Earth.
#1 St. Augustine Lighthouse, Florida
The location is the subject of numerous ghost stories and supernatural legends. The lighthouse in St. Augustine was built in 1874. Hezekiah H. Pittee was responsible for its construction. To entertain his restless children, he allowed them to play with the supply cart that ran back and forth between the lighthouse and the ocean. But on July 10, 1873, he would come to regret that decision. The cart toppled over and the two eldest Pittee children, Eliza and Mary, drowned.
Today and most days since then, the girls can be heard laughing at the top of the tower late at night. Others have spotted Eliza floating about the grounds wearing the same blue dress she died in.
#2 Edinburgh Castle, Scotland
One of the biggest attractions in Scotland’s capital city is also considered to be one of its most haunted. there have been numerous reports of paranormal activity over the years. Former prisoners are said to haunt the dungeons and a headless drummer, first seen shortly before Oliver Cromwell attacked the castle in 1650, has also been spotted.
There is also a story about a young piper who disappeared without a trace hundreds of years ago. He can still be heard today, the faint, haunting sound of a lost soul. You can try to find out by staying in one of the hotels near the castle.
#3 Catacombs of Paris, France
Deep below the streets of Paris lies a sprawling tunnel system filled with the human bones of some 6 million dead people. As Paris grew into its a role as a major European hub, it eventually ran into a major problem: by the 17th century, enough people had lived and died in Paris that its cemeteries were overflowing, overstuffed with graves to the point when corpses, at times became uncovered. The solution arose to place them in the centuries-old tunnels that had existed beneath the streets of Paris since the 13th century, remnants of a time when limestone quarries were mined to build Paris into a thriving city.
Since the catacombs’ opening visitors have reported seeing orbs, voices, and strange shadows in the tunnels, Philibert Aspairt is one notable ghost who haunts the catacombs. In 1793, Aspairt lost his way in the catacombs. He was found dead near an exit eleven years later. He haunts the catacombs every year on November 3, the day he went missing.
#4 First World Hotel, Malaysia
#5 Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai, India
This is another beautiful hotel located in Mumbai, however, it also has its ghost. Legend has it that Jamshedji Tata was once denied permission to enter the Watson Hotel by the British. Facing this brazen discrimination, Mr Tata got the hotel’s architectural plan made by W.A. Chambers. When Chambers returned from his England trip, he found that the hotel did not follow the architectural plans which he designed. The architect committed suicide by jumping from the 5th floor of the hotel.
It’s believed that Chambers’ ghost still walks in the Old Wing of the Hotel Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai, making it a hotspot among haunted hotels in India.
#6 Port Arthur, Tasmania
Port Arthur is a small town and former convict settlement on the Tasman Peninsula, in Tasmania, Australia. Port Arthur is one of Australia's most significant heritage areas and an open-air museum. From 1833 until 1853, it was the destination for the hardest of convicted British criminals, those who were secondary offenders having reoffended after their arrival in Australia. Rebellious personalities from other convict stations were also sent there. In addition, Port Arthur had some of the strictest security measures of the British penal system.
In 1996 it was the scene of the worst mass murder in post-colonial Australian history after 35 people were killed and 23 wounded when Martin Bryant opened fire in the site's cafe with a rifle. So it’s believed that those dead prisoners and innocent victims are still there trying to find peace.
#7 Moundsville Penitentiary, West Virginia
The West Virginia Penitentiary, opened in 1876, has a beautiful stone facade and Gothic castle-like style. Nowadays no one can even imagine what terrible events took place there.
In the late 1800s, Moundsville took over all executions for the state. In all, 85 men were hung and nine electrocuted. The executions were only a small part of the violent past at Moundsville. Suicide, murder, and violent punishments contributed to the death of hundreds of inmates.
With its violent past, deplorable conditions and two major riots, Moundsville Penitentiary is a popular destination for those who study paranormal activity. Tortured spirits are still behind bars and in the bowels of the prison and may be seen or heard there.
