Find out what stands behind numbers in the names of famous brands

Since the age of twelve, Chanel was brought up in an orphanage and the number five always had a potent associations for her. So when in 1920 presented with several samples of scent compositions, she picked number five saying to her master perfumer: "I present my dress collections on the fifth of May, the fifth month of the year and so we will let this sample number five keep the name it has already, it will bring good luck."

Excellent German sport car Porsche 911, a legend of car manufacturing, saw the light in 1963. At that moment manufacturers planned to define different generations of the same car with three numbers. Initially, they wanted to call it Porsche 901, but Peugeot, a French competitor, claimed the rights on 3-digits car-names with zero in the middle and thus, the use of 901 was forbidden. So Porsche simply changed "0" to "1".

In 1853 Levi Strauss opened his variety shop "Levi Strauss @ Co." He was making trousers for American cowboys out of any durable cloth, then - out of a more soft French fabric "Serge de Nime". Soon afterwards, the name was shortened to the word "Denim". Manufacturing of modern type jeans started in 1920s. First 501 model jeans had no belt D-rings, since they were supposed to be worn with braces. 501 was merely the fabric batch number.

The figure 57 appeared on Heinz sauce and preserves labels in the context of the advertising company, invented by the brand founder Henry J. Heinz in 1896.
"57 Varieties of Pickles" was initially the slogan, though in fact the company was producing more than 60 types of goods at that time.
But Heinz believed in magic of 57 - it consisted of his favorite figures. To add to this, Heinz thought number 7 has a positive psychological effect on people.

Initially the name of the drink was much more complicated - "Bib-label Lithiated Lemon Lime Soda". There are several versions of the origin of the drink's modern name:
1)First 7up bottles were 7 ounces in volume
2)initially the drink consisted of 7 ingredients
3)Lithium was on the drink's ingredients, and its atomic mass is 7.
For a long time in US lithium had been considered as an excellent cure for depression. Manufacturers stopped using the dangerous ingredient only in 1950.

There is no exact information about the origin of inscription "Old No.7".
But there are a lot of legends: that Jack Daniel had 7 girlfriends; that he lost a batch of whiskey and found it only 7 years later; that the recipe was invented only after 7th attempt...
The most convincing theory was suggested by Peter Krass, Daniel's biographer: initially Jack's distillery was marked as "7", But then authorities changed its number to "16". Jack neither wanted to argue with authorities nor to confuse his customers, so he started using inscription "Old No.7".
